The Mother Road
Runs Through
a National Park

Sixty-three national parks protect canyons, coastlines, mountains, and caves. Exactly one of them protects a piece of a highway.

01Stop One · A Genuine "Only Park" Claim

The National Park Service Says So Directly

This isn't marketing language. It's the park's own stated history.

The National Park Service's own history page for Petrified Forest states plainly that it's "the only park in the National Park System containing a section of Historic Route 66." Route 66 was established in 1926, connecting Chicago to Los Angeles and becoming one of the most storied highways in American road-trip history, and its original alignment through northern Arizona ran directly across what's now the park's northern reach, near the Painted Desert.

Route 66 was formally decertified as a U.S. highway in 1985, replaced by the interstate system, and much of its original roadbed across the country has been paved over, rerouted, or lost entirely. The stretch inside Petrified Forest survived because the land it crosses became federally protected, freezing that piece of the Mother Road in place while the rest of the highway around it changed.

The Route 66 alignment sits near the park's north entrance, close to the Painted Desert Visitor Center.

02Stop Two · What's Still There to See

A Roadbed, Old Telephone Poles, and a Marker

There's no working highway left to drive, but the alignment itself is still visible on the ground.

Visitors today can find the historic alignment marked with an interpretive pull-out near the Painted Desert, where a line of original roadside telephone poles still stands alongside the old roadbed, along with a vintage automobile placed as a period marker for the highway era. It's a quiet stop compared to the park's petrified logs and painted badlands, more historical marker than tourist attraction, but it's the only place in the entire National Park System where Route 66 itself falls inside a park boundary rather than just running nearby.

For a highway that shaped mid-century American travel, migration, and pop culture as much as Route 66 did, having exactly one preserved fragment inside a national park is a strange kind of honor: not the busiest stretch, not the most photographed, just the one that happened to end up on protected land before the rest of it disappeared.

The "only park containing a section of Historic Route 66" claim checked directly against the National Park Service's own Route 66 history page for Petrified Forest. Route 66's 1926 establishment and 1985 national decertification checked against standard federal highway history. The park's own materials do not give a specific date for when this local stretch was bypassed, so no precise local bypass date is stated here.

Most of Route 66 that survives today does so as nostalgia, a diner sign here, a stretch of cracked asphalt there, kept alive by enthusiasts rather than federal protection. The piece inside Petrified Forest is different: it's not preserved because someone loved it enough to save it. It's preserved because the ancient forest underneath it already was, and the highway just happened to be standing on the right patch of desert when the boundary was drawn.
