A tide app that says "low tide, 3 feet" sounds like exactly what a tide-pool trip needs. It isn't. The National Park Service is specific about this in a way most visitor guidance never bothers to be: a standard 3-foot low tide barely uncovers anything worth seeing at Ruby Beach. The good tide pools stay hidden until the water drops under 1 foot.

Get the number right and the reward is real: sea stacks with their bases fully exposed, tide pools thick with anemone and starfish, a walk that simply doesn't exist at any other water level. Get it wrong and it's a scenic beach with wet rocks.

01The Mistake

Checking for "Low Tide" Isn't Enough

Most tide charts show four tides a day. Only the lowest of those is worth planning around here.

Coastal Washington runs on a mixed semidiurnal tide, which in practice means two high tides and two low tides a day, and they're rarely the same height as each other. A quick glance at "low tide: 8:42am" tells you nothing about whether that particular low is a good one. Some daily lows sit around 3 feet, which the Park Service itself calls insufficient for real tidepooling. Others drop close to zero or into negative numbers. Same label, completely different beach.

02The Actual Number

Aim Under One Foot

The National Park Service's own guidance is specific: below 1 foot is what actually opens the beach up.

NPS guidance for Olympic's coast is direct about the threshold: aim for tides lower than 1 foot for real tidepooling, since standard 3-foot lows don't expose enough of the intertidal zone to be worth the trip. A tide table showing a negative number, a minus tide, is the best case, uncovering ground that stays underwater on most days entirely. Any real tide app or NOAA's own tide predictions for the nearest station will show the actual height, not just the label "low," and that's the number to plan around.

03The Real Risk

The Tide That Got You Out Is the Same One Coming Back

A dropping tide can turn without warning. That's the whole reason for the phrase "sneaker wave."

The same NPS guidance that recommends chasing a low tide also warns, in the same breath, to watch closely for the returning water and sneaker waves, the unpredictable surges that can arrive well before the tide table says the water should be back. Algae-covered rocks are slippery even when dry-looking, and testing footing before committing weight is standard advice here for a reason. None of this means avoid a good low tide. It means treat the clock as a countdown, not a guarantee, and never turn your back on the water for long.

04On the Sand

Look, Don't Take

Every creature exposed by a good low tide, anemone, sea stars, hermit crabs, is living on borrowed time until the water returns, and handling or removing them costs more than it looks like from the surface. The Park Service points visitors to the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary's tidepool etiquette for the specifics, but the short version holds everywhere on this coast: look closely, photograph freely, put nothing in a pocket, and leave every rock exactly as it was found. The tide will bring the same view back on the next good low. It only works if there's still something there to see.
